We are an Enlightened Faith, embracing the idea of God, led by an evangelistic Latino president toward multi-cultural and truly diverse congregations; grounded and rooted in our Sources, we will be the global religion for our time. At least, that is one way to view and describe the momentum and flavor of this annual gathering of more than three thousand delegates from hundreds of churches. Of course, there would be as many different takes on the shifting shape of things as there were delegates, but I thought First Church folk might be interested in mine—so here goes:

PETER MORALES ELECTED PRESIDENT

Peter is a native of San Antonio, has served as senior minister of a large Colorado church, and is widely known for his “UU Evangelism” seminars and videos. His campaign slogan, “We can be the religion for our time,” apparently struck a chord with voters. He ran a vigorous and dynamic campaign, promising more efficient and accountable administration and strong support for local congregations. I have congratulated Peter, and have invited him to preach at First Church.

Dallas minister Laurel Hallman, long considered the frontrunner for President, was gracious in her concession, noting that she and Peter had enjoyed each other and the ir exchange of ideas during the long campaign. She asked me to pass on her appreciation for the strong support she received from First Church, especially from Laura Nagel, one of our delegates who was indefatigable in her work for Laurel at G.A. and before.
